At 96 years old, Louise Bourgeois continues to rejuvenate her artistic language, as if time were no obstacle to her. And yet, in her long life, on several occasions she has been a part of history, especially the history of art, on a journey that has taken her through surrealism, abstract expressionism, and minimalism, until she found a language and style all her own. The Centre Pompidou is currently dedicating an exhibition to her work, in collaboration with the Tate Modern in London, and featuring works from 1940 to 2007, divided by chronology and theme.

A tormented, restless artist, but also considered the last of the great 20th century masters.
In his attempts to contrast abstractionism, he rigorously depicted the anxieties of modern man, and that subtle, rather dark existential feeling. His strong, dramatic images are very popular with the general public, so much so that his works have not been exhibited in Italy since 1993. They are now once again on show in an exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, with a selection of works coming from some of the most important collections in the world.

A travelling show, which after appearing at the Los Angeles MOCA, has now reached the PS1 in New York. It is the first comprehensive artistic retrospective of the feminist revolution, focusing on the period between 1965 and 1980. How? With works by 120 artists, all women naturally, who at the time operated either alone or in groups, comprising a broad range of media – painting, sculpture, video and performance-art – based on a single theme: feminist politics. So far, everything’s clear enough. But one question still remains… why WACK? …To contrast and contest the stereotypical notion of being ‘weak’, a term too often associated with and used to describe women…

Peter Doig made a name for himself in the 1990s, and was especially notable for a particular feature of his painting: the fact that he was one of the very few figurative artists still around. Figurative, definitely, but also one of a kind. In 2002, all trace of him seemed to have been lost, but only because he moved to Trinidad: a creative escape. Now he has returned, and is appearing at the Tate in London with a series of works, many of which have never been shown before. The result is a fascinating exhibition, made even more interesting by the fact that his approach to figurative art seems to have changed again, so that there is now talk of him being a contemporary Turner…

For the entire twentieth century, colours were assigned contradictory and paradoxical values: sometimes they were considered representative of spiritual truths or scientific validity. Colour, and certain colours in particular, created a sort of excitement, especially when applied to mass-produced, standardised commercial products.
Color Chart is the first exhibition to be dedicated entirely to the key role played by colour in the century of transformations, and features the work of artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.

Chanel has decided to make its legendary bag the focus of an event on an International scale: MOBILE ART, a travelling exhibition that will be presented in Asia, the United States and Europe. But the innovative thing about this exhibition compared to other previous travelling shows, is that not only do the contents of the exhibition move, but so does the actual container itself! Architect Zaha Hadid was asked to design a container/pavilion that would be as enigmatic as its contents, one that could be assembled, disassembled and transported. Architecture, art and fashion are on the move, thanks to Chanel.

The new play-exhibition at the Milan Children’s Museum features games and experiments designed for very young children, based on the works of Bruno Munari dedicated to them.
It is the first time that attention has been turned so directly towards such a specific, and in its own way, such a demanding audience.
The topics covered are those closet to the sensitivities, curiosity and demands of very young children. Touch, handle, compose, decompose, experiment are the various stages in a process of learning and training on direct experience and play.

What on earth would art know about ecology? Quite a lot, it would seem, and it has a lot to say about it. Evidence can be found in the works selected for the exhibition Greenwashing, which at the end of February brings to a close an entire year dedicated to the environment at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. The artists involved don’t provide us with solutions, but rather their own individual views on the ‘environment question’. Their works stimulate discussion, analyze, criticize, and pose new questions. From the USA to China, by way of Europe, a single voice can be heard: ‘greenwashing’! A choral message for an increasingly ‘eco’ world.

The Bologna Museum of Modern Art (MAMbo) is proud to present the very first Italian exhibition of American artists Guyton/Walker. Wade Guyton and Kelley Walker make a rather odd couple. Both are still in their thirties, and each has their very own strong, precise language and style, but these individual artistic sensitivities merge in a single entity to create a ‘third artist’: Guyton/Walker, reinterpreting and recycling images drawn from the media.
References from the 1980s, put together using a blend of computerised graphics, silkscreen and digital printing. So what have they come up with for MAMbo? A maxi format installation.

Two major Brazilian museums have already hosted part of the itinerant show dedicated to the work of Cesare Berlinghieri, but the exhibition by Aguinaldo Coelho and Celso Fioravante has moved on, and a few days ago began its third and last stage at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio. There are 52 works on display, covering 40 years in the career of Cesare Berlingeri, and revealing several distinctive elements such as the use of monochrome, the relationship between painting and sculpture, memory, eroticism, and sacredness.

If it is true that Pop Art will never age, then the same is true of its heroes. In Paris it is now the turn of Derek Boshier, a worthy contemporary of David Hockney and John Allen at the London College of Fine Art in the Sixties. After his historic collaborations with David Bowie and The Clash, his attention shifted mainly to Los Angeles, the city where for some time he has lived and worked, observing and gathering its multi-faceted nature. The Galerie du Centre in Paris, a not-to-be-missed gallery, is mounting an exhibition of his most recent works, the latest creations by a boyish seventy-year old who never fails to amaze.

This Taiwan born artist today lives and works in Brooklyn. She holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University. She has just turned thirty, and her work has already been the subject of an exhibition at Foxy Production in New York. Now she makes her ‘west coast’ debut, with a solo exhibition at Cherry and Martin in Los Angeles, and her artistic adventure, after all, has just started… Her materials? You name it, she uses it: paper, lacquer, cement, mirrors, practically anything that allows her to investigate and reflect everyday reality, the big and small stories of objects we use every day, in a site-specific installation for Cherry and Martin.

On show at the Ca’ di Fra gallery in Milan, this is the new series of works by José Molina, the ‘wandering Madrilenian’ who has been in Italy for some time now. His subtle yet profound graphic skills bring to life images of memory, fear, and uneasiness, suspended somewhere between caricature and introspection, in a reality that is surreal, yet terribly genuine.
The pencil and pastel works of José Molina reawaken our most intimate secrets, but a sense of irony alters the tone and attenuates the impact.
Today’s ‘Predatores’ are hidden everywhere, but especially within us. José succeeds in giving them a face… and being able to look them in the face can help to make the difference...!

How important is the word in art? The MART in Rovereto has decided to investigate this theme, and has set a team of highly-respected curators the difficult task of answering this question. The team, consisting of Gabriella Belli, Achille Bonito Oliva, Andreas Hepkemeyer, Nicoletta Boschiero, Paola Pettenella, Melania Gazzotti, Daniela Ferrari, Julia Trolp and Giorgio Zanchetti, have sought the solution in the history of art, examining a variety of artistic poetics ranging from the avant-garde artists of the twentieth century to the most recent experiments in art. The result is eight hundred works on show, from Martinetti to…Tracy Emin!

A new solo presentation of the work of Roman Signer at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, this exhibition is every bit as original and unorthodox as the rest of Signer’s work, which since 1987, with Documenta 8 in Kassel, and through to his various appearances at the Venice ‘Biennale’, has never failed to amaze. Mixed-media, films, sculptures and installations are the features of this latest ‘incursion’ into the art scene. What drives his work? Once again, the answer is time, the way in which it is perceived, and the impression it leaves behind. What are the tools of his trade? The absurd, various experiments with the concept of the absurd using objects that are completely useless, but remind us of the importance of continuing to be amazed.

The Special Exhibitions Gallery on the third floor of New York’s MoMa is currently running an unusual and rather particular exhibition, a journey through the etchings of one of the most introspective and original of modern figurative artists: Lucian Freud.
The exhibition consists of a selection of works, brought together in a cross-media installation, ranging from the 1940s to the early 1980s, in a swirl of psychological tension and impeccable technique. A hidden side of Lucian Freud, now revealed in all its subtle and profound introspection. Is this a show only for connoisseurs? Absolutely not. It is simply another chance to get to know one of the foremost figures of modern art.
